MiLi Pico Projector 2 review

MiLi Pico Projector 2
The last time that we discussed MiLi, it had to do with the MiLi HD unveiled at CES 2011. Now, they have the Pico Projector 2.

The Pico Projector 2 is apparently fifty percent slimmer than its former model, and its battery life has been extended to about 2.5 hours. It also has that “slimmer form factor”.

The design of the Pico Projector 2 isn’t really made for home theaters, but it is good for portability, and cases in which the user can just whip out a projector from their jacket pocket. Especially one that is compatible with the iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, not to mention an AV device like a PC or Mac.

If something like this is truly “floating your boat” as far as a portable projector goes, then you should probably get aboard this particular train. The MiLi Pico Projector 2 should soon be available from BeamBox on May 26 for a price about $482. (Cybertheater.com)

Vivitek introduces the Qumi at CES 2011

Vivitek introduces the Qumi at CES 2011
Vivitek is no stranger to projectors, such as the H9080FD and the H1080FD. At CES 2011 this year, they unveiled the Qumi.

The Qumi is part of a new line of the company’s LED-based projectors, and weighs in at 1.6 pounds. It is also the first pocket projector to be 3D ready with Texas Instruments DLP Link technology. It is definitely ready for work or play, and good for sharing digital content.

Speaking of 3D, Vivitek told me that they had perfected 2D to 3D conversion, so you can watch a 2D film in 3D, provided you’re wearing the glasses. Personally, I think they might have been boasting a little too much.

It should be available in May 2011 for an estimated price of $499.00(USD). Key features and specifications are after the jump.

Qumi Key Features/Specifications:

* Native WXGA (1280×800) resolution
* Up to 300 lumens of brightness and a 2500:1 contrast ratio
* 3D-Ready (via DLP Link) and a DLP chipset from Texas Instruments
* 1.6 pounds; Dimensions: 6.3”(w) x 1.2”(h) x 3.9”(d)
* 30,000+ estimated LED hours of operation
* Connectivity options include: Mini-HDMI, Universal I/O (24-pin connector for VGA/component input), 3.5mm video-in, 3.5mm mini-jack audio-out
* USB and MicroSD slots for content and memory expansion
* Built-in 1W speaker
* Offered in a black or white finish

3M PocketProjector MP180 shown off at CES 2011

3M PocketProjector MP180 shown off at CES 2011
We have looked at 3M’s Portable Projectors before with the MP160 and the Shoot N’ Share camera, and now there is more as they put the big company put the PocketProjector MP180 on display at CES.

This one comes a touchscreen for ease of use, allowing you the user to find files, and arrange and edit presentations. It has 4GB of built-in memory with 2 hours of battery life.

The screen is capable of a giant 80 inches, and the unit itself has 4GB built right in. It comes equipped with both WiFi and Bluetooth technology for quick transfers as well.

I don’t have a price point as yet, but I am told that the MP180 should be out by the end of this month.

IOS-Ready Pico-Projector Turns Your Phone into a Theater

IOS-Ready Pico-Projector Turns Your Phone into a Theater
The SHOWWX+ pico-projector from MicroVision could be the ultimate movie-accessory for your iPad. The laser-projector hooks straight into the dock-connector of your iPad (or other iOS device) and throws an image onto the wall, giving a picture of up to 100-inches. The plus-sign in the name designates that the new projector is 50-percent brighter than its predecessor, so you might be able to get that 100-inch image without closing all the curtains and killing the lights.

The dream is that you can turn an iPhone or iPad into the center of a home-theater setup: a big-screen picture courtesy of the pocket-sized projector, and external, wireless sound thanks to the new AirPlay feature of iOS 4.2 (AirPlay will beam sound that is synced to a movie, something which even the Mac won’t do without third-party software).

The specs: The SHOWWX+ puts out 15 lumens with a 5,000:1 contrast ratio (depending on ambient light, of course) in a 16:9 aspect-ratio. While that wide-screen format is wasted on the iPad, you can hook the projector up to any device that will feed it a composite video signal. Cables for both this and the iPad come in the box, and a VGA adapter for your computer can be bought separately. Resolution is 848 x 480, not high-def but then, neither is your iPad (the iPad outputs its native native 1024×768 resolution via the VGA-adapter). One big advantage of the laser projector is that it has “infinite focus”, which means it will work on curved walls, or even give a sharp picture if you haven’t got it perfectly perpendicular to the screen.

Is the SHOWWX+ worth its $450 price-tag? We’ll find out soon enough: There’s already a test unit winging its way from MicroVision to Gadget Lab Spain.
