Nvidia GeForce 500M details and compare at CES 2011

Nvidia GeForce 500M details and compare at CES 2011
The Santa Clara company’s official launch of the series of Nvidia GeForce 500, evolution of GeForce 400M. The leap in performance compared to the past should not be exciting. Find out the details.

Basically, the series of Nvidia GeForce 500M video cards are the evolution of the GeForce 400M previous range. From this inherit the CUDA chip same 96-core (except for the top model of the category with 144 Core) and the bus for the memory to 128 bits, just as happens, for example, the GeForce GT 435m. This, in essence, suggests that the manufacturer has not intervened massively on the technology, preferring to exploit the existing know-how, before moving on to solutions made by different production systems.

Compare to the previous series, Nvidia GeForce 500M offers a frequency of 672 MHz for the GPU, which become 1344 MHz shader and 900 MHz for memory. These, in essence, are the main technical data for the model said Nvidia GeForce GT 540M of the mainstream. Taking as a reference, however, the aforementioned Nvidia GeForce GT 555m, these values are equal, respectively, at 590, 900 and 1180 MHz but the memory bus is 192 bits.

Despite these circumstances, it is not a line to fail, quite the contrary. Remains to be seen, in fact, the large number of integrated technologies that make it pretty interesting even before evaluating its performance on the field, is not an impartial referee. The GeForce 500M series supports, as expected, DirectX11 graphics libraries and is therefore suitable to deal with multimedia and games without too many problems. There are also 3D Vision and PhysX technology, already known and seen in previous models.

To underline the support that Optimus feature, remember, manages activation of dedicated video card compared to the controller integrated into a computing system when conditions so require. Differently, is to safeguard the autonomy and reduced fuel consumption. The new line of GPU models include the GeForce GT 540M, GT 550M and GT 555M notebook dedicated to high-performance and GeForce GT 520M and 525M for mainstream systems.

Nvidia GeForce GT 540M, which is actually one of the most interesting models, should be available in the coming weeks on the Chinese market initially before moving on to other international markets. Have in common the same fate as the other models in the series. Simultaneously, the manufacturer also introduced the GeForce GTX 485M characterized by frequencies of 575 MHz for the GPU’s shader and memory work, respectively, to 1,150 and 750 MHz but the most interesting feature is the number of CUDA Core equal to 384 and the 256-bit memory bus.

Samsung LN46C600 LCD Television Review

Samsung LN46C600 LCD Television Review
Samsung has offered up plenty of televisions in all subclasses, so it’s always worth taking a look at them. You never know when you’ll be out looking at televisions, find a Samsung, and want to know if it’s worth your time. That’s why we’re looking at the Samsung LN46C600, an LCD that will have plenty to offer and do so at a good price, to boot.

The Samsung LN46C600 is a forty six inch 1080p LCD television that offers a 120 Hz refresh rate to reduce blurring in high speed images, the Wide Color Enhancer systems to improve color presentation, BD Wise to automatically adjust the relevant settings on your peripherals to get the best possible image out of them, two ten watt speakers, ConnectShare Movie to access content on thumb drives and digital cameras directly, four HDMI ports, two component inputs and one PC input.

Again, we’re short on the basics here–we’ve got a great picture and somewhat weaker sound quality (you’ll note there are plenty of augmentations to the picture but not near so much to the speakers), and you’ll get more than enough ports for your various needs, whether you need newer ports or old. Get this thing hooked up to even the most rudimentary of home theater speaker systems and you should be doing just fine here.

It’s a little hard to look at a television that doesn’t offer the next generation of capability, no streaming here at all, but it will still do a nice job of providing your current needs, whether they be older or newer, just not the very newest.

And you’ll even be able to find this one at a pretty nice price–in two different places you can find this at seven hundred ninety seven dollars, and that’s not a terrible price for a television slightly larger than the smallest of the big screens.

The Samsung LN46C600 isn’t the best you’ll find, but it will do a pretty nice job with most anything you’ll need it for. It’s surprisingly impressive for a smaller large television, and it will definitely put a punch in your home theater system.

Panasonic ToughBook CF-19 Laptop

If you're a regular reader of TrustedReviews you will have seen my previous ToughBook reviews. You will also be aware that I try to put these notebooks through as much punishment as possible while I have them in my possession. You see the Panasonic ToughBook is a very different type of notebook computer. It's not about the latest CPU or the fastest graphics chip, oh no. The ToughBook line is all about survival!

I'm sure that Darwin wasn't thinking about laptops when he wrote about natural selection, but I'd say that it's a safe bet that if you threw a dozen notebooks on a desert island for a year, it would be the ToughBook that would survive the ordeal and claim the million Dollar prize. Whether or not Darwin actually coined the phrase "survival of the fittest" (it still seems to be open to debate), there's little doubt that the ToughBook range of notebooks would survive the trials of life better than any other.

The CF-19 falls under Panasonic's fully rugged moniker, meaning that it will stand up to almost anything. That includes being dropped from almost a metre, being showered with water, being thrown in the mud and being dragged through dust and sand. It's therefore no surprise that ToughBooks are used by the US military, where the conditions are often inhospitable to say the least. In fact Panasonic was keen to mention that a ToughBook saved a soldier's life during Desert Storm, which I mentioned in my CF-29 review.

The unusual thing about the CF-19 and the CF-18 before it, is that despite being as tough as an armadillo, it's also pretty small and light. Weighing in at 2.25kg and measuring 271 x 216 x 49mm (WxDxH), the CF-19's proportions don't indicate that it could withstand serious abuse, but believe me, it can. The video embedded on this page shows the CF-19 being dropped from a metre high, being doused in water, having someone jump on it and having it doused in more water with the lid open. You can also see from the video that the CF-19 still worked after all that punishment and was happy to be doused in yet more water when powered on.

Because fully rugged ToughBooks are built to be used in extreme environments, pointer movement can be something of an issue. It's hard to use a touchpad when it's covered in mud or dust, so Panasonic has equipped the CF-19 with a touch screen instead. Now, when I reviewed the CF-29 I found it incredibly simple to navigate Windows with my index finger, but when I reviewed the CF-18 I realised that the 10.4in screen made this a little tricky. The same is true for the CF-19, which utilises the same 10.4in screen, but Panasonic gets around this problem by hiding a stylus just below the screen. Continuing with the rough and ready theme, there's also a supplied cord that attaches the stylus to the CF-19, to make sure that you don't lose it while you're kyaking down the Yukon.

A New Laptop Digital Roll Review

A New Laptop Digital Roll Review
Ask anyone what a laptop, a notebook, or a netbook looks like and the chances are they’ll tell you it has a screen and a keypad and is sort of square shaped but maybe with rounded corners.

Ask them to elaborate on differences between the various models and you are likely to hear about differences in thickness, whether it’s light or heavy, and the sizes of the screens. Some may come out and speak about fancy features like raised keyboards or multi card slots, data security maybe.
Then you have those who would focus on the different colours and trims, whether it’s glossy or matt what they are made of and so on.
A New Laptop Digital Roll Review
The point I’m getting at here is that basically all laptops, no matter what you call them, follow the same basic bookish design with maybe a few added touches, features or specifications that differentiate them from the rest.

You would be pretty shocked if someone came out and said that a laptop is cylindrical or tube shaped and that it rolls up like a scroll. It might even cross your mind that they were completely mad or some alien creature from another planet.

That just isn’t an image the masses are likely to have in mind at all when you mention a laptop and yet that is exactly the design that computer scientist and designer Hao Hua has come up with.

Ok so it’s still at the conceptual stage and not a reality yet but what an exciting idea.

According to Hao Hua the digital roll as he calls it is “the next generation laptop design”. Personally, I can’t wait.

The laptop would have a flexible OLED screen, a roll-able keyboard and the straps double up as USB outlets.

It even has a mouse and a webcam that you can attach to your wrist. This really is computing on the go at its best.

Hao has even put a lot of thought into the cooling system which is equally as innovative as the rest of the design.
A New Laptop Digital Roll Review
droll 500x263 The “Digital Roll” A New Laptop Concept That Breaks The Mould

I particularly like the thought that has gone into the in-between bit that allows you to check your emails quickly without unravelling the ‘laptop’ entirely.

Are we likely to see it making an appearance on the streets any time soon? Unfortunately no! But you can bet that I for one will be waiting when it does.

New Sony's VAIO PC PictureBook C1VN

New Sony's VAIO PC PictureBook C1VN
Sony today announced that its new VAIO PictureBook C1VN will feature the Crusoe processor, whose energy-saving capabilities will substantially enhance the popular notebook PC's battery life.

New Processor Nearly Doubles the Battery Life of VAIO PictureBook PC for up to 5 1/2 Hours(a) of Mobile Use Sony Electronics today announced that its new VAIO(R) PictureBook C1VN notebook computer will feature the Crusoe(TM) processor, whose energy-saving capabilities will substantially enhance the popular notebook PC's battery life. With the new C1VN model expected to ship next month, Sony is slated to be the first to bring the benefits of the Crusoe processor to U.S. consumers. "With Sony's VAIO PC line, we're constantly enhancing the consumer's PC experience by providing the world's most robust technologies in stylish, ultra-light and compact form-factors," said Mark Hanson, vice president and general manager for VAIO PC products at Sony Electronics.

"At just 2.2 pounds, the PictureBook is light weight. Couple that with the enhanced battery life Sony is experiencing with Crusoe and consumers get more productive mobile time and greater flexibility in how they use their notebooks. With this technology, there's no reason to be tethered to a power cord or searching for an AC adapter." In addition to substantially improved battery life, the PictureBook features a new built-in progressive scan camera for better digital still and video images and a full complement of digital video editing software, making it one of the market's smallest, most powerful business computing and digital video editing systems. Among the PictureBook's full suite of office and entertainment applications is Sony's MovieShaker(TM) -- a fun, simple application for producing digital home movies, complete with transitions, effects and music -- Intuit Quicken(R) 2000, QuickTime (TM), Microsoft(R) Word 2000 and Adobe's Photo Deluxe(R), Business Edition. Also featured are additional Sony applications, including DVgate(TM) and PictureGear(TM), which allow users to capture full motion digital video and still photography for dynamic multimedia presentations -- or even video e-mail. PictureGear(TM) allows for enhanced management of digital content - both sound and video files. Users can visually organize and manage personal digital content collections including still images, digital video clips, MP3 files and much more.

In addition to the super-fast 600 MHz(b) Crusoe Processor and the new progressive-scan CCD camera, the VAIO PictureBook has a 12 GB(c) hard drive, 128 MB of SDRAM -- and a dedicated MagicGate(TM) Memory Stick(R) media slot for easy storage of downloadable SDMI-compliant music, high-resolution images and other data. The VAIO PictureBook features Sony's programmable Jog Dial(TM) control for easy application loading of a host of user-friendly applications.

The new PictureBook PC begins shipping in October with an estimated selling price of $2,299(d) The PictureBook will also feature Microsoft(R) Windows(R) Millennium Edition (Me) operating system. "It's no surprise that Sony, the company that created the ultralight notebook category, is first to market with Crusoe," said Dave Ditzel, chief executive officer, Transmeta. "Unlike other microprocessors, Crusoe uses an innovative 'smart layer' of software to perform functions normally done in hardware on a chip. This fundamental, unique design difference allows Crusoe to be smaller, run cooler and be more power-efficient than traditional microprocessors."

CASIO's Fiva Notebook Review

CASIO's Fiva Notebook Review
Casio Computer, most famous for watches or pocket organizers, will be introducing a Crusoe-based sub-notebook at COMDEX, Monday November 13th. The sleek little Cassiopeia Fiva weighs in less than one Kilo, measures less than 1 inch (21mm to be exact) thick, uses a 8.4" TFT screen and can run for an eternal 9 hours with the largest battery option.

In the few days after Tranmeta's IPO arrived there have been a slew of product announcements, and more are expected throughout the week as COMDEX unfolds. The Cassiopeia Fiva is still in prototype stage, but is expected to hit the market as soon as Q1 2001. It is not clear if the Fiva will be available in North America at this time, or just Asia. Currently, most of the notebooks, or sub-notebooks which have made it to market have only been released in Japan where there are more services available to compliment the notebooks. In particular integrated wireless internet access has been a major selling point.

"The prototype unit is the size of an A5 file with a thickness of 21 millimeters (0.8 inch), housed in a lightweight, compact body. The unit weighs less than a kilogram (35.3 ounces) and features an 8.4-inch SVGA TFT LCD."

Casio has managed to squeeze upwards of 6 to 9 hours out of the unit, when employing the largest battery size. It has not been stated what the average battery time will be for the standard battery the unit ships with. The large battery is an extra purchase for would-be Fiva buyers. Although detailed technical specs are scarce at this time, the Fiva, running WindowsMe, will include the following features: "diverse I/O standards, including compatibility with a 100Base-TX LAN, iEEE1394, USB, a CompactFlash (CF) Type II card slot, a PC Type II card slot and a v.90/K56 Flex high-speed modem, and also offers excellent expandability and network connectivity."

With additional notebook suppliers being mentioned on an almost daily basis, it will be interesting to see how Transmeta's (NASDAQ: TMTA) stock will fair in the days after COMDEX. The loss of a potential deal with IBM to include Crusoe in its ThinkPad 240 was a large mental-stumbling point for many investors.

The Fujitsu Lifebook P-2000 is one of the few widely available Crusoe-based notebooks in North America, and one which has generated quite the cult following for its size, battery life and wickedly well suited display for DVD's. Under the hood, is Transmeta's current flagship processor, the 867MHz TM5800 Crusoe.

Since this is also the notebook we use behind the sceens, we are going to be offering a few guides here to help out with upgrades, software and tweaks to get the best performance possible. There are already a considerable amount of resources on the P-2000 located at www.leog.net as well. For the official word on specs, visit Fujitsu's website.

So lets get started with the first Fujitsu P-2000 guide about how to upgrade the subnotebooks memory.

1.) How much extra memory can you add to the on board 256MB?

The current model of the Fujitsu P-2000 only accepts one, 128MB microDIMM memory module.

2.) What kind of memory do you need?

Full sized notebooks typically allow you to expand their memory with one 144-pin SO-DIMM module of SDRAM. Single and double spindle subnotebooks like the Fujitsu P-2000 don't have as much room to spare inside and so the tiny SO-DIMM modules aren't practical. Instead, these small notebooks use 144-pin microDIMM's. Essentially, these sticks of memory have a condensed PCB which crams the four TSOP-II memory chips into a more efficient piece of real estate.

In the image below we have the two sticks set up side-by-side for comparisons sake. Both types of DIMM have 144-pins, but they are in no way compatible. So, to recap, the Fujitsu P-2000 uses 144 pin microDIMM memory (bottom module).

3.) Where can you find the right memory for the P-2000?

For this guide we went right to Crucial.com to pick up a 128MB 144-pin microDIMM module (Crucial Part No.CT253602) of PC133 CAS3 SDRAM. That's the exact description of the memory, but you can just click this link to go there directly.

The Fujitsu P-2000 is limited to just one 128MB expansion module, so even if you can find a 256MB microDIMM chances are it won't fit, or it won't work. Smaller 64MB memory modules are also available, but there really isn't any point in upgrading half way is there? Let's Begin...

Sony VAIO C1MV Picturebook with Processor Versi Crusoe TM5800

Sony VAIO C1MV Picturebook with Processor Versi Crusoe TM5800
When Sony first introduced the Picturebook it was the very first Cruseo-based subnotebook to make it on to the market. The release of the C1MV Picturebook on Transmeta's 0.13 micron TM5800 signifies that subnotebooks with non-Intel chips are growing in demand. The C1MV features a 733MHz TM5800 processor, Windows XP and the standard integrated CMOS camera above the high resolution 3/4 size TFT display. The VAIO C1MV and is expected to retail for about $1900USD mid-November 2001.

Like the earlier Crusoe-powered VAIO Picturebook's the C1MV is incredibly slim and portable - but while still packing in a host of features that make it useful to both the business and home user. At 1.0" thick and weighing a 2.2 pounds, the C1MV comes standard with a 20GB hard drive, 128MB DDR memory, 8MB ATI Radeon-M graphics chip, 8.95" UWSXGA (1280x600) TFT display and TM5800 733 MHz Crusoe processor.

The TM5800 series is manufactured on the 0.13 micron process, enabling the C1MV to consume less power and remain in use for upto 15.5 with a quad-size battery. The standard size battery has enough power for the VAIO C1MV to remain in operation for up to 4 hours. As with previous Picturebooks, battery life is influenced by how much the CMOS camera is used. All that in a package which measures 1" x 9.8" x 6" and weighs only 2.2lbs!

Port Replicator

Since subnotebooks are notorious for casting aside anything that even remotely fits under the term "legacy" the VAIO C1MV comes bundled with a external port-replicator. The port replicator makes it possible for C1MV users to make use of a 10/100 Ethernet connection or multimedia ports for video editing for example.

Business will probably be content to just leave the port replicator and all the cables at work, and take the C1MV alone. The C1MV subnotebook is with a V.90 modem, IEEE 1394 connection, and Memory Stick media slot - Sony's brand of proprietory flash memory. Three different sizes of batteries are available to power the notebook; standard, double and quad. With the largest battery pack clipped in, the C1MV can run for about 15.5 hours, and with the double battery 8 hours.

DVD-Quality Video

The hallmark of any VAIO Picturebook is the built-in rotating CMOS camera just above the 8.9" TFT screen. On the VAIO C1MV, the designers have opted to use a progressive scan camera with one-button capture or digital still and video images - directly to the computer.

The C1MV also sports MPEG1 thru MPEG4 and JPEG support to yield an ideal platform for viewing DVD quality video on the 1280 x 600 screen. The notebook even goes so far as to house a built-in real time MPEG2 encoder and decoder. The encoder makes it possible for users to convert an external video source to MPEG2 for higher quality video playback.

Given Sony's past efforts the C1MV looks to be a tantalizing extension of the original Picturebook, and one which will hopefully offer users a Cruseo-based platform with long battery life, decent performance, and superb functionality.

Fujitsu's Biblo Loox Laptops Specs

Fujitsu's Biblo Loox Laptops Specs
Fujitsu announced way back at the end of September that they would be supporting the Crusoe line of processors with two sub-notebooks, the FMV Biblo Loox T (FMVLT553W3) and the FMV Biblo Loox S (FMVLS553W ). While Sony seems to have beaten them to the punch with the Crusoe-powered VAIO series (which will be available in North America) the Biblo Loox are looking kinna cool in their own light. The 3/4 high LCD screen seems like a new trend in portable design.

For the most part the specs that Fujitsu lists for their Biblo Loox S & T are standard, the clock speed for the TM5600 doesn't seem to jive with previous statements about it's speed though. The TM5600 is supposed to be a 700Mhz chip, probably just a typo on their part.

Battery life for each device, with standard sized batter sits at 4 hours or below . Apparently a large battery will push that life span toward 7.5-8 hours. Both portable computers will never see a store's shelf in North America, as they are intended solely for the Japanese market. If you've been wondering what "LOOX" means this should help, in the original, unedited (translated) version :)

"LOOX - Coined word. "The LOOK" (you see) + "X" (infinity / unknown)
" By the fact that the knitting machine is utilized, the internet "infinity" Anytime and "you look," at information / possibility, simply anywhere it can do thing,"
With we include the meaning of saying."

The full spec sheets are listed on the next page, as well as the full press release (it went through an online translator so it's a bit rough around the edges).

Sony VAIO PCG-U1 Crusoe Ultra Notebook

Sony VAIO PCG-U1 Crusoe Ultra Notebook
Sony were the first to introduce a Crusoe based subnotebook and this time around they are the first to introduce a palm-top ultra subnotebook (what we are calling the PCG-U1 around here). The PCG-U1 is powered by a TM5800 Crusoe processor running at 867MHz and sports up to four hours of battery life in a package the measures less than 185mm wide. The XGA screen on this little guy is 6.4" in size and supports a resolution of 1024×768 pixels. The ultra subnotebook weighs just 820 grams.

The TM5800 is Transmeta's newest Crusoe processor which comes equipped with 128 Kb of L1 and 512KB of L2 cache. The chip is based on the 0.13 micron process and is expected to eventually scale to 1.0GHz. Equipped with 128MB of SDRAM, and expandable to 256MB, the PCG-U1 also comes with a 20GB ATA100 harddrive. All other media drives are external, connecting via USB, or port replicators, except for a Sony memory stick port.

With Windows XP home edition loaded on to the small 20GB hard drive, and room for proprietory Sony Memory sticks on the side the PCG-U1 at least features an RJ45 network adaptor, twin USB ports, and Firewire jack for large data transfers. One Type II PCMCIA port is integrated with in the ultra sub notebook, and larger batteries can be clipped on to the bottom to boost the average 2 hour lifespan to 4 hours.

At the moment the Sony VIAO PCG-U1 is only available in Japan, and is like to remain that way for some time to come. The small form factor that the Japanese love so much is often difficult for western individuals to use because hand sizes tend to be larger. The U1 is an interesting step to take a notebook computer - sort of a glorified PDA with notebook qualities, but it remains to be see what real market share devices like this will be able to capture. With cellphones, PDA's and now notebooks converging on the same features it is getting difficult to tell the lines between ultra portable and ultra superfluous application duplication.... after all if your cell phone can now open word documents, and your PDA can send email, should the notebook become a cellphone... only Confucius can really tell for sure.

Alienware’s M11x Gaming Notebook

Alienware’s M11x Gaming Notebook
Alienware’s 11.6-inch, 4.5 pound, sub-$1000 gaming laptop has landed at the Geek.com offices.

The M11x is one most portable gaming systems ever, and one of the only one that can double as a rather nice thin-and-light laptop. It packs game-ready NVIDIA GeForce GT 335M graphics along with a Intel Core 2 Duo ULV processor (U7300) for extending the battery life as much as possible.

Starting at $799 this is computer is going to appeal to a lot of people, including those who want an Alienware but need portability or that have been dreaming about gaming on-the-run. There are downsides to the light weight though–you have an ultraportable sized display on a thin-and-light chassis, the battery is not removable, and you don’t have an optical drive. These three details feel relatively minor when you are gaming on a 4.5 pound laptop though.

Check back at Geek.com for a full review and check out our YouTube channel for further coverage of the M11x, including gaming benchmarks.
