Acer is one of the most prolific laptop manufacturers and its Aspire range boasts everything from budget portables to the most powerful multimedia monsters. The Aspire 5741Z is the former, a smart and surprisingly powerful entry-level laptop.

Budget machines make some tough compromises to cut costs, and one of the first casualties is often performance. However, while the Acer’s Pentium P6000 processor has been around a while, it’s extremely powerful. We found we could browse the web, play music and run various applications all at once, with only the occasional slowdown.

The Acer Aspire 5741Z also scored highly in our graphical benchmark tests. There’s no dedicated graphics card, with the processor handling images instead, but we were highly impressed to find we could watch Full HD video and run complex photo editing suites. At this price point, that’s quite a feat.

We also like the Acer’s design, which is undoubtedly smarter than rivals such as the HP Compaq Presario CQ62-220SA and eMachines G627-202G25Mi. The brushed metal interior is resistant to fingerprints and belies the low cost, although we did notice some flex when you press on the palmrests.

You can comfortably carry the slim 2.5kg chassis if you need something to occupy you on commutes or long trips, while 250 minutes of laptop battery life between charges is an impressive result.

An important feature that should never be compromised, no matter what the price, is usability. Thankfully, the Acer Aspire 5741Z’s keyboard is typically excellent.

Acer TravelMate 5760 Laptop Reviews and Specs

Acer has unveiled a 15in laptop that aims to deliver high-performance and fulfill the security needs of enterprise users on the move.

The Acer TravelMate 5760 will ship with a choice of Intel Core i3 or Core i5 chipsets, and be able to support up to 8GB of DDR3 RAM.

A 15.6in LED-backlit HD display with a resolution of 1,366 x 768 is incorporated into the chassis, which the firm claims is 33 per cent more efficient than standard laptop screens.

Connectivity comes in the form of three USB 2.0 connections, an external VGA port, HDMI output, as well as the usual Ethernet and audio jacks.

In terms of battery life, users can expect four hours of usage from the 4400 mAh 6-cell Li-ion pack. This rises to six hours with the 6000 mAh 6-cell battery, and Acer claims a maximum of nine hours when using the 9000 mAh 9-cell Li-ion pack.

With a 6-cell battery pack weighing 2.54kg and a 9-cell pack weighing 2.81kg, the TravelMate is portable but remains heavier than other laptops such as the Samsung Series 9, Asus U36 and Apple MacBook Air.

However, with Acer offering a low price point, this could be attractive to business users on a budget. Acer has confirmed that the TravelMate 5760 will be available from mid-July with prices starting at £379 + VAT.

The CX480 come with 14-inch notebook, which is based on the second generation Intel Core family processor. Designed for students, home users and business professionals, the laptop features a choice of a 2.30GHz Intel Core i5-2410M or a 2.10GHz Intel Core i3-2310M processor, up to 8GB DDR3 memory, a 640GB hard disk drive, a 14-inch HD (1366 x 768) LED backlight display and a DVD burner. Sony Vaio VPCF21Z1E/B Review

We’ve seen laptops capable of rendering 3D before, but Sony’s luxurious Vaio is the best so far. It’s a heavy brute at 3.1kg, with striking high-gloss black plastic on its lid and top deck. The latter is offset by a raised rubbery platform, which forms an extended wrist rest and incorporates the trackpad into its length. The pad has a patterned texture to help keep fingers on track.

The display is a great example of what a modern screen should be -irrespective of its high-refresh-rate 3D credentials. But by God, it’s thick. At 13mm deep, the lid alone is about as thick as a MacBook Air.

Yet it’s the image quality that stands out on the Sony Vaio’s lovely anti-glare panel. Colours are deep and richly hued. Off-axis viewing is respectable, too. The Vaio’s keyboard is of the classic Scrabble-tile-style pioneered by Sony with a number keypad to help fill the space on the stretched deck that’s inevitable with 16:9 widescreen panels.

To the left side are gigabit Ethernet, HDMI and VGA ports, plus two USB 3.O. On the right are one USB 2.0 port audio jacks and a Blu-ray/DVD combo drive. This drive can write to BD-R and BD-RE, too – a rare thing, seven long years after the format launched.

The Vaio is somewhat noisy, with its internal fans blowing out plenty of air even when the machine isn’t stressed. You can hear intelligent fans constantly changing speed as they adjust to internal heat.

A pair of 3D active-shutter glasses is supplied – these are reasonably lightweight, and powered by a calculator battery. A tiny button switches them on, and the power down after a brief period of inactivity – sensing when the frames aren’t synched to screen.

The 3D experience is compelling. To watch specially coded Blu-ray films in 3D you simply pop in the disc and fire up Corel WinDVD. We did notice some slight image wobbling, but that could be an issue with the only 3D film we tried, Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs.

To test the gaming potential, we used our Fear benchmark. We were surprised to see that, without any twiddling, the game was rendered in 3D. We saw frame rates of 20fps at ‘Maximum’ detail settings in 3D, and 32fps at ‘High’ detail. [Article source: sexygadgets.net]
