Toshiba Satellite P745-S4217 Laptops Review

The Toshiba Satellite P745-S4217 look is not complicated, but it's not bad. Dark gray in color, with textured horizontal lines of varying widths sweeping both the cover and the inner and outer borders of the keyboard, the laptop has a suave, adult look. This is complemented by the glossy black chiclet keys and the glowing white lights that can be found on the power button, media keys, and lining the multitouch-enabled touchpad. The black bezel around the LED-backlit, 14-inch, 1,366-by-768 display completes the look, and houses the webcam and microphone to boot. Weighing 4.9 pounds, the P745-S4217-A1 is not unduly heavy.

For networking you get a built-in wireless LAN that supports 802.11 b/g/n for roaming around Borders and surfing the web. The wired option is a 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet LAN adapter accessible through a standard RJ-45 adapter. You can use these network connections with a built-in True Vision webcam with digital microphone to make it easy to video chat with your friends and family.

Other features include Intel Wireless Display technology, a built-in fingerprint reader for added security and a brushed aluminum finish. External ports include 2 high-speed USB 2.0 ports, 1 HDMI port for connecting to your HDTV, 1 VGA port, 1 headphone and 1 microphone in.

The laptop measures 9″ x 13.4″ x 1.3″ and weighs 4.4 pounds. The 6-cell Lithium ion battery pack provides up to 6.5 hours of unplugged power which is great performance.

You can find the HP Pavilion dm4-1265dx laptop for around $750. [bbspot]

Toshiba Satellite M645-S4118x Review

The M645-S4118X has a plastic chassis with Toshiba's Fusion finish—a textured pattern that prevents fingerprints and smudges. It's a familiar look for Toshiba, as it's the same look shared across the entire Toshiba Satellite line-up. Given that nearly identical Toshiba laptops have been coming through PC Labs for over a year, it would be nice to see Toshiba update this design. In terms of dimensions, the Satellite M645-S4118X was fairly ordinary, measuring 1.4 by 13.3 by 9 inches (HWD). It weighs 4.9 pounds, which is average for the 14-inch category, but considerably lighter than the 5.5-pound HP Envy 14-1210NR ($999.99 list, 4 stars). The M645-S4118X also comes equipped with a spacious 640GB 5,400rpm hard drive. This speed is fairly common for 14-inch systems, but a faster hard drive can occasionally be found. I wouldn't fret about the speed of the drive, it's larger than the 500GB drive found in the Gateway ID49C13u ($680 street, 4 stars), but not as large as the 750GB drive found in the HP Envy 14-1210NR. If more storage space is needed, you can take advantage of the speedy USB 3.0 connection found on the side of the laptop. Your own photos and videos can be uploaded quickly thanks to a built-in multiple format card reader (SD, MMC, MS/Pro/Duo). A wireless Bluetooth 3.0 connection will also let you connect everything from your smartphone to headphones with a speedy cordless connection.

Although it looks very simple, but the Dell Inspiron i14RN4110-7616DBK has some good connections and wireless capabilities and size of the hard disk at a reasonable price.

The Inspiron i14RN4110-7616DBK come with 14-inch screen has a resolution of 1,366 by 768 and is covered with a bright anti-glare coating. The picture quality is good and the screen is bright enough, but the panel loses its brightness seen from a wide angle. The glossy coating is a reflection, but it does help provide brighter colors than matte-finish screens.

This laptops is well stocked with features. On the left side of the chassis are VGA and HDMI, eSATA / USB 2.0 combo port, a USB 2.0 port and a unit of 8-in-1 card. On the right are two audio jacks, a fast USB 3.0 port and a multi-disc DVD. Around the back are a second USB 3.0 port and an Ethernet port. There is a webcam integrated 1 megapixel in the top frame of the screen and a good variety of wireless, including Intel Centrino 6150 WiMAX broadband, 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and networking.

Storage is abundant, thanks to a 500GB hard drive. The 5400 rpm drive is preloaded with Windows 7 Home Premium and Dell software suite that includes photo step and video editing applications, games and music file player and organizer. You also get a burning software Roxio Creator Starter, webcam utility, Dell DataSafe backup software locally, and a trial version of McAfee Security Center.
